Proper Fractions ~ Self Paced Course

This course is designed for the novice learner and is perfect for students who may struggle with foundations in mathematics. Each lesson is crafted for learners ages 10-15 and the comprehensive course serves as a robust foundation for building mathematical prowess throughout middle grades math.

  • Summary

During the lesson, we focus on adding proper fractions with like denominators. To begin this lesson we need to remember what proper fractions are and where the denominators are located. When two or more fractions have the same number in the denominator position, we call these LIKE FRACTIONS.

    I can…..

    1. I can identify proper fractions that are like

    2. I can add proper fractions with like denominators

    3. I can add proper fractions with like denominators using models

    Summary

During the lesson, we focus on adding proper fractions with unlike denominators. To begin this lesson we need to remember what proper fractions are and where the denominators are located. When two or more fractions have a different number in the denominator position, we call these UNLIKE FRACTIONS. When we have unlike fractions with different denominators, the first job is to make the denominators the same.

    I can…..

    1. I can identify proper fractions that are unlike

    2. I can add proper fractions with unlike denominators

    3. I can add proper fractions with unlike denominators using models

  • Summary

During the lesson, we focus on subtracting proper fractions with like denominators. Adding and subtracting proper fractions with like denominators is the same process. Subtracting proper fractions with like denominators is different from adding proper fractions with like denominators because you cannot switch the order of the fractions when subtracting one from the other.

    I can…..

    1. I can subtract proper fractions with like denominator

    Summary

During the lesson, we focus on subtracting proper fractions with unlike denominators. To begin this lesson we need to remember what proper fractions are and where the denominators are located. When two or more fractions have a different number in the denominator position, we call these UNLIKE FRACTIONS. When we have unlike fractions with different denominators, the first job is to make the denominators the same. After making the denominators the same, we must also remember that the order MATTERS.

    I can…..

    1. I can subtract proper fractions with unlike denominators

  • Summary

Multiplication of all fractions is a "Straight Across" process.

    I can…..

    1. I can multiply proper fractions

  • Summary

Dividing proper fractions means changing the division problem into a multiplication problem by using the reciprocal of the second fraction. The reciprocal is found by switching the numerator and denominator of the second fraction. Once the division is rewritten as multiplication, we multiply straight across and simplify the result. This method works because dividing by a fraction is the same as asking how many times that fraction fits into another number. Sometimes the quotient is greater than the numbers we started with, and sometimes it is smaller, depending on the fractions being divided. Simplifying the answer makes it easier to understand and compare to other values.

    I can…..

    1. I can divide proper fractions
