Fraction Operations ~ Middle Grades Math (Texas TEKS 7.3B)
This Fraction Operations course is designed to help students build a strong foundation in working with fractions—an area where many learners struggle. Through a carefully structured two-lesson format, students will explore how to confidently add, subtract, multiply, and divide proper fractions. The course includes direct-teach videos, guided notes, interactive practice, and assessments, all aligned with the standard:
“Apply and extend previous understandings of operations to solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of rational numbers specific to fractions.”
What you’ll learn
-
Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions.
-
The learner will be able to solve mathematical and real-world scenarios using operations of fractions with greater than 80% accuracy (proficiency).
-
2 Days
Pace of the lesson is student dependent. Go at your own pace.

Learning Intention ~ Start of Course
Before diving in, students are asked to reflect on their current understanding of fraction operations. Using a 4-point mastery scale—from Novice Navigator to Fraction Pro—students self-assess their readiness. This step promotes ownership of learning and helps guide the pace and depth of instruction.
-
Notebook and Materials for Success
To get the most out of this course, students will need:
A dedicated math notebook or digital note-taking tool
A pencil and eraser (or stylus)
Access to a calculator (basic functions only)
Guided notes (provided)
A quiet, distraction-free workspace
Resource Ideas to Include:
Printable guided notes (linked)
Fraction strips or visual fraction models (digital or paper)
A whiteboard and markers for practice (optional, but great for kinesthetic learners)
-
Adding and Subtracting Fractions
In this lesson, students will:
Review equivalent fractions and common denominators
Learn how to align denominators to add and subtract accurately
Practice with real-world examples and step-by-step demonstrations
This lesson includes:
A video walkthrough that mirrors the guided notes
Interactive Google Form checks for understanding
Answer keys for self-check or guided correction
The structured approach ensures that students not only know what to do, but understand why each step matters.

Multiplication and Division of Fractions
-
Multiplying and Dividing fractions
Building on the skills from Lesson 1, this lesson focuses on:
Multiplying fractions using area models and abstract strategies
Understanding reciprocal relationships in division
Included in this lesson:
A clear, paced video lesson
Guided notes to organize thinking and work
A Google Form quiz to check for understanding
Answer keys and breakdowns for review and correction
This lesson empowers students to move from procedural knowledge to confident application.
-
Learning Intention ~ End of course
To close the course, students return to the Fraction Mastery Scale to reflect on their growth. With a new understanding of how fraction operations work together, students often move up at least one level in proficiency. This self-assessment helps reinforce learning gains and builds confidence going forward.
